Maine has it's fair share of weird bugs.

There's no denying that Maine is host to plenty of creepy-crawly things that on one likes to think about, like house centipedes and praying mantises. Even worse, a lot of people don't believe we have cockroaches in Maine. But most folks find that out just fine when they move into their first sketchy apartment. Then you see just how many roaches there are...

In the summertime around here, one could argue bugs are at their worst. Not specifically just the 6-legged's. Spiders abound, ticks are everywhere... It's a veritable Horror House of critters that make your skin crawl. Some not so much. For instance, annual cicadas, AKA "dog day" cicadas.

I think they make a sad sound.

If there's one thing that's kind of a bummer about the sound of the annual cicada, other than it's kind of annoying, is that it's a tell-tale sign of the end of summer. Since they don't really come out until the end of July/beginning of August, they're just singing the song of the end of warm weather and outdoor fun.

In other states though, they're in for a fresh hell we can't even imagine. See, this year is kind of a perfect storm for the other kind of cicadas that only emerge every 13 and every 17, years. All of those bugs are going to pop at the same time. What's crazy is that this only happens once every 221 years, and won't happen again until 2245, according to CNN.

Luckily, we're spared all of this madness. The habitat for those cicadas is down in the Southeastern US and in the Midwest. Those folks will be pummeled with noise, dead cicadas, and exoskeletons everywhere. Honestly, it doesn't sound like any fun at all. I'm personally just going to chalk this up  as another boon to living here in Maine. Those nasty cicadas are just one more crappy thing the rest of the country has to deal with, that we don't.

How do people deal in exotic bugs if they don't mail them? Oh, don't mail these things either?
