Washburn Continues Winning Ways, Beats PVHS

In their pursuit of what would be a record fifth state championship, the Washburn girls rolled over a game PVHS Howlers team during the evening session at the Cross Insurance Center in Bangor.

With its unrelenting pressure defense, the Beavers forced 22 turnovers in their 61-36 win Monday evening.

Mackenzie Worcester scored 29 points in the win. Laina Mette scored 13 points and Joan Overman added 11 in the win.

Samantha Ireland was the top scorer for PVHS, finishing with 12 points.
PVHS finishes its season at 11-8.

Washburn will play Machias in the semifinals.

Machias Bulldogs Edge Central Aroostook Panthers in OT

The Machias Bulldogs outlasted a tough Central Aroostook team in Monday night’s quarterfinal match-up at the Cross Insurance Center in Bangor.

It took overtime for the Bulldogs, the No. 5 seed in Eastern Maine Class D, to defeat the No. 13 Panthers 44-38 to advance to the semifinals.

The game was close throughout with sophomore guard Kelsey Dominique of Central Aroostook hitting a 3-pointer to send the game to overtime.

For Machias, Tate Dolley, the Bulldogs’ 6-foot junior, scored 19 points. Junior guard Kate Whitney added 15, including four key points in overtime. Whitney was named the McDonald’s Player of the Game.

For Central Aroostook, who ends the season 9-11, Molly Anthony scored 11 points, Kassidy Levesque 10 and Dominique had 9 points.

Edward Little Handles Brewer in Quarterfinals

The top-seeded Edward Little Red Eddies handled the Brewer Witches Monday afternoon at their Class A quarterfinal match-up at the Augusta Civic Center, coming away with a 54-38 win.

It was a convincing win for the Red Eddies, now 18-1, although the Witches gave them all they could handle through three quarters. Brewer, who finished with a 9-12 record, led 11-7 after one quarter and had a chance to cut it to one point in the third, but missed three foul shots.

For Edward Little, Ian Mileikis had 17 points. Lew Jensen added 9 points and 12 rebounds in the win. Mileikis and Jensen were named co-players of the game.

For Brewer, senior Jared St. Thomas had 17 points. Logan Rogerson added 7 and Matt Pushard scored 5 points.

Edward Little will advance to the Eastern Maine semifinals against Lewiston at 8:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Feb. 18. The Blue Devils defeated the Cony Rams 89-51 in the first game of the day.

S. Aroostook defeats Shead in Class D Quarterfinals

After No. 7 Shead got out to a 5-0 lead, No. 2 Southern Aroostook Warriors rattled off 14 unanswered points on their way to 17-7 first quarter lead in their quarterfinal contest at the Cross Insurance Center in Bangor on Monday.

From there, the Warriors never trailed, finishing off the Tigers in a 56-39 final.
Southern Aroostook is looking to return to the Eastern Maine finals, where they lost in 2014 to Hodgdon. But first they’ll have to get by No. 3 Fort Fairfield in a 2 p.m. semifinal game on Thursday.

Fort Fairfield defeated Schenck 55-39 in the first game of the day in Bangor.
Only four Warriors got into the scoring column on Monday, with sophomore Jackson Mathers finishing with 26 points. Nolan Altvater, another sophomore, had 17 points and senior Cameron Landry had 10 points. Mathers was awarded the McDonald’s Player of the Game award.

For Shead, senior Anthony Theriault had 19 points.
