Miami Marlins star Giancarlo Stanton was hit in the face by a Mike Fiers pitch in the fifth inning Thursday night and the injuries include facial lacerations, multiple facial fractures and dental damage. His season is likely over.

Stanton is a leading candidate for National League MVP. The outfielder is leading the NL in home runs(37) and in RBI(105).

On the pitch that hit Stanton, the umpire at first base ruled he did not check his swing and called it a strike.

The Brewers won the game 4-2.

Stanton has long been rumored to be a trade candidate because of the big contract he is likely to get. The Red Sox have been one of the teams mentioned as a possible place of destination.
