A disastrous 8th inning cost Chris Sale a win and spoiled Alex Cora's managerial debut. The Tampa Bay Rays scored six times in the 8th and beat the Red Sox 6-4 on opening day.
Boston relievers Joe Kelly and Carson Smith combined to walk four batters and allow six runs as the Sox went from a 4-0 lead to a 6-4 deficit.
After all the walks it was a Denard Spann bases clearing triple that ended up being the big blow.
All of it spoiled a great outing by Sale who worked six innings, striking out 9, allowing one hit and no runs. He gets a no decision.
NOTE: Game 2 of the series is Friday night and Sports Radio 92.9 The Ticket has live coverage beginning at 6:25pm.
