The man who kept law enforcement at bay during the longest active manhunt in Maine history is formally charged for the murder of his ex-girlfriend.

Burton is accused of killing 37-year-old Stephanie Ginn Gebo on June 5th in the Parkman home the two had once shared. Gebo broke up with Burton the week before her death. The BDN reports she was so afraid of him that she had changed the locks and was sleeping with a handgun. That night, she was shot twice in the back and a police affidavit says there was evidence that a pillow was used to muffle the shots. Police speculate that she was shot with her own gun after wounding Burton when he broke into the house. Gebo's 13-year-old daughter found her body the next morning on the floor of the bedroom.

The murder happened one day after Robert Burton's probation from a previous domestic violence case expired. He has a long criminal history with convictions for kidnapping, terrorizing, assault with a deadly weapon, tampering with a witness, among other brushes with the law. He disappeared after Gebo's murder and was only spotted a couple of times in the woods around the Guilford-Parkman area.

On August 11th, the 38-year-old turned himself in at the Piscataquis County Jail, telling police he was afraid that he was going to be shot. Involved in the search by that time were Local and State Police, the Piscataquis County Sheriff's offices, Game Wardens, and the FBI. Residents were being advised to lock their doors, even when they were home or in their cars. There's no word, at this point, about how Burton eluded police for so long, but investigators speculated that he was breaking into people's camps and stealing what he needed.
