The Portland Sea Dogs are changing their name - to the Maine Whoopie Pies! Turns out it will only be a one day thing.

The Red Sox Double-A team in Portland is teaming up with the Maine Whoopie Pie Festival in Dover-Foxcroft to celebrates the official  state treat of Maine, so proclaimed by the Maine Legislature.

The Whoopie Pies will play Reading Fightin' Phils at Hadlock Field in Portland on Friday night, June 21st. That coincides with the annual Whoopie Pie Festival in Dover-Foxcroft on Saturday, June 22nd..

The Sea Dogs will wear and sell special uniforms and hats that day. They'll have a whoopie pie eating contest at Hadlock Field and other related events.

Several minor league teams have changed their names to help promote unique or popular items in their region.

NOTE: The Sea Dogs open their Eastern League season on Thursday, April 4th.
