The Cumberland County Civic Center in Portland played host to the first round of the high school basketball state championships as the undefeated Presque Isle Wildcats looked to defend their title in a rematch of the 2012 state final with the western Maine champs Lake Region Lakers.

Presque Isle (22-0) turned on the heat in the second half, with Chandler Guerrette leading the charge to a 51-44 comeback win over Lake Region (19-3.)

Guerrette finished with 35 points.

After the Wildcats struggled in the first half, the game was tightened in the second half, with Presque Isle cutting the lead Lake Region lead to 36-33 with a three-pointer from Megan Ireland in the waning seconds of the third quarter.

The Wildcats pressure produced results in the final quarter, with Presque Isle hitting key shots down the stretch and outscoring Lake Region 30-15 in the second half.

The Wildcats made it to Friday's final after defeating Nokomis 66-51 behind strong efforts by Ireland and Guerrette.

Falmouth Rolls Over Medomak To Claim Gold Ball

In the late game, Falmouth (21-1) led the entire way in a 62-39 victory over Medomak Valley (19-3) of Waldoboro.
