For the Boston Red Sox, waiting out two rainouts was worth it. A 9-2 pounding of the Minnesota Twins combined with a Yankees loss puts the Sox all alone on first place.
The first delay was about an hour long before the game was started and then another 76-minute delay between the second and third inning.
No matter for lefty Drew Pomeranz - he pitched the first five innings, giving up one unearned run on four hits. He struck out seven and did not walk a batter.
On offense the Sox got a home run from catcher Christian Vazquez, his first homer in a year. DH Chris Young ripped a 3-run homer. Dustin Pedoria had three hits and a RBI>
The Sox improve to 43-34 and combined with a 4-3 Yankee loss Boston moves into first place in the AL East.
