Shearer, Burnett, Vassiliev Nominated For Athlete Of The Week
Time for you to vote again for the High School Athlete of the Week. This week's excellent student-athletes include a distance runner, a baseball pitcher and a lacrosse player.
Hampden Academy distance runner Helen Shearer won both the 1600m (5:24.07) and 3200m (11:44.18) events at the PVC track meet in Caribou. The meet featured nine schools from the North Region.
Shearer won the EMITL/PVC Indoor title in the mile and two-mile events. She won the Class A state title in the two-mile.
Ellsworth HS senior Matt Burnett threw a 4-0 complete game shutout over Belfast last week, striking out nine and allowing just two hits.
Burnett is 4-0 with a 1.31 ERA this spring with 29 strikeouts in 16 innings.
He leads an Ellsworth staff that is 8-0 with an ERA of 0.74 in 47 innings of work.
Bangor HS senior Nason Vassiliev helped the Rams lacrosse team to three wins last week, over Erskine, John Bapst and Brewer. Vassiliev scored eight goals and had six assists last week. For the season, he has 20 goals for the 6-1 Rams. Both Vassiliev and fellow senior Jacob Henry (19 goals, 6 assists) went past the 100 point mark in just the second season for lacrosse at Bangor.
