Brock Holt ripped the first pitch of the ninth inning for a home run late Saturday night and the Red Sox beat the Padres 5-4. He hit it off All Star closer Kirby Yates.

That's two in a row over the Padres with one more game to be played this afternoon.

This one was anything but easy.

After taking a 4-0 lead early in the game, starter Nathan Eovaldi couldn't get an out in the fourth inning and left with a 4-2 lead. But that meant the Sox bullpen had to pitch six innings.

Marcus Walden, Darwinszon Hernandez, Ryan Brasier, Josh Taylor, Matt Barnes and Brandon Workman combined to hold the Padres to two runs and give the Sox offense a chance to win it.

Barnes got credit for the win. Workman got the save.

Mookie Betts, Mitch Moreland and Christian Vazquez all had two hits.

The Sox are 70-61 and now trail Tampa Bay by six games for that wildcard playoff spot.

NOTE: Injured David Price will not make his start today. Brian Johnson will instead. Live Red Sox coverage today begins at 3:10pm.
