The Boston Celtics on Wednesday announced that they have assigned guard Rajon Rondo to the Maine Red Claws.

“Rajon is progressing terrifically in his rehab and this is the next step,” Danny Ainge, Celtics President of Basketball Operations, said in a news release. “This is a brief assignment so that Rajon can participate in a workout this afternoon with the Red Claws and he will be called back up to the Celtics upon the conclusion of the workout.

Rondo has not played for the Celtics this season as he recovers from a torn ACL in his right knee.

Earlier this week, Rondo fueled speculation via his Twitter account that he would return to action on Friday against the Los Angeles Lakers.
