The Boston Celtics have announced that they are going to purchase the Maine Red Claws team that plays in Portland as part of the NBA's G-League.

Once the deal is complete, the Celtics will be the sole owner of the franchise.

“The Celtics have been great partners with the Red Claws over the last ten seasons. We are thrilled that the Celtics will continue to build upon the success we have had in making the Red Claws an important part of the Maine community,” said Bill Ryan Jr., Maine Red Claws Chairman and Principal Owner. - Celtics/Red Claws Press Release

Ryan led a group that bought by team 10 years ago and the Red Claws made their debut in the 2009-10 season.

The move for a NBA team to own their G-League team is a growing trend. At least two dozen NBA clubs now own their G-League teams.
