The Hampden Broncos vs Messalonskee Eagles schoolboy hoops matchup tonight features the two teams to have won six of the last seven regional Class A championships.

The Broncos claim five of them and the Eagles claim last year's title.

Hampden Broncos (Last Year: 14-4, #2 seed): Coach Russ Bartlett begins his 15th season at the helm of Bronco basketball. From 2012 to 2015 Hampden was in every state title game in Class A but the last two years the Broncs have been ousted in the tournament.

6-5 senior Ian McIntyre will lead the charge. Bryce Lausier, Kory Winch, Tommy Raye and Jon Wolfington have also logged lots on minutes over the past couple of year.

The KVAC preseason coaches poll had Hampden as the top team in Class A North.

Messalonskee Eagles (Last Year: 13-5, #5 seed, Regional Champs): Coach Pete McLaughlin, beginning his ninth season as head coach, led his team to the state championship game a year ago, losing to Greely. A strong group of seniors graduated, including Nate Violette and Jame Kouletsis.

The Eagles will have seniors Chase Warren and Cole Wood returning.

The preseason poll among coaches picked Messo as the #6 team in Class A North.

NOTE: Other opening night schoolboy games include Bangor hosting Lewiston. Brewer is at Nokomis, Belfast at MCI, Mattanawcook at PVHS, Mt. VIew at Winslow, COny at Lawrence, Waterville at Oceanside, Central Arookstook at Houlton.

On the schoolgirl side, Bangor is at Lewiston, Brewer hosts Nokomis, Ellsworth at Orono, MDI at Old Town, Hampden at Messalonskee, PCHS at Schenck, Winslow at Mt. View, Stearns at Lee Academy.
