The day after Thanksgiving means shopping for some and hoops for others. The 6th annual Frederick 'Smokey' Lawrence Memorial Preseason Tournament featured six area teams.

The Cross Insurance Center was the spot for boys and girls teams from Orono, John Bapst, Central and Brewer. Each team got a chance to play two games.

Smokey Lawrence was a fixture on the local sports landscape for years before his death. He work as an official and the coordinated  officials, scorekeepers and PA announcers for schools in need of help.

The Brewer boys beat Orono 51-48 with Trevor Pearson scoring 12 points to lead the Witches.

The game featured the return of Ed Kohtala to the sidelines. He stepped down from coaching at Bangor three years ago and returns as coach of the Red Riots.

In a girls early day matchup, the Orono Red Riots beat Central 33-22.

The games continue through a final game scheduled for 6:45pm tonight.
