Smith First-Time Labor Day Race Winner
For the fifth straight year, Old Town's Erik McCarthy beat the field at the 56th Labor Day Roadrace in Bangor. Holden's Grace Smith was the women's winner. About 120 runners took part in the 58th edition of this holiday event.
McCarthy's winning time was 26:03. Not bad considering he took part in the annual Katahdin 100 Relay Event on Saturday. From Indian Island to Katahdin, McCarthy did four sections of seven to nine miles at a time.
Hall of Fame runner Judson Cake finished second with a time of 27:44. John Goupee was third.
Holden's Grace Smith is a first time winner of the Labor Day Race. She is a junior at UMaine. She ran track and cross country for Brewer High School. Smith said she is using this race for training for the Maine Marathon at the end of the month. It will be her first marathon.
