Cheverus High School in Portland has hired former University of Southern Maine coach Gary Fifield to be its new girls basketball coach.

Fifield retired as USM women's coach and Associate Athletic Director in 2015 after 27 years. His Huskies teams won 660 games and played in the NCAA Division III championship round five times.

In August, Fifield will be inducted into the Maine Basketball Hall of Fame.

At Cheverus, Fifield replaces Steve Huntington as Stags coach. The team went 11-7 in Class AA North last season and  lost to Bangor in the quarterfinal round of the tournament.

Fifiled takes over immediately and will run the summer program at Cheverus.
