Encouraging news down on the farm for the Boston Red Sox. Their #1 pitching prospect, Jay Groome had his best outing as a professional player last night for the Single-A Greenville Drive team.

Groome pitched six innings of one-hit, shutout ball vs Ashville. The 18-year-old stuck out eight and walked just one batter. He threw 91 pitches in those six innings, which is the most pitches he's thrown as a pro.

Groome was the Red Sox #1 pick(#12 overall) in June of last year. He was signed right out of high school.

Groome hurt his back in the first start of the season and spent almost two months on the DL. Then last month Groome's father was arrested in New Jersey on drugs and weapons charges.

Last night's start was his 7th at Greenville. Groome is 2-4 with a 7.90 ERA in 27 innings.
