Portland golfer John Hayes topped the field with a 1-under par 71 at the USGA Mid-Amateur qualifier in Massachusetts today and that earns Hayes a spot in the national Mid-Amateur Tournament in Atlanta in October.

Hayes began the Maine tournament golf season with a win at the Downeast Metro Tourney at Bangor Muni in early June.

67 golfers compete for just four spots in the USGA Mid-Am field in October.

Three-time Maine Amateur champ, Ricky Jones from Thomaston, did not qualify. He shot a +6 and tied for 26th place.

The Mid-Amateur Tournament is for players at least 25-years-old.

NOTE: Earlier this month, Bangor golfer Staci Creech earned a spot in the USGA Women's Mid-Amateur Tournament in October. That tounament will be played in Florida. It is the second straight year Creech has qualfied for the national event.
