After 30 years of broadcasting Charlotte Hornets NBA games Millinocket native Steve Martin is retiring at the end of the season.

Martin, who started his broadcasting career on Millinocket radio and then worked on radio and TV in Bangor for WABI, has been the voice of the Hornets since the franchise joined the NBA in 1988.

Over the years Martin also called college football and basketball games on TV for Jefferson-Pilot Sports and Raycom Sports. He is a three time winner of the North Carolina Sportscaster of the Year.

The Hornets plan to recognize Martin at their last home game on April 8th.

NOTE: Hornets head coach Steve Clifford also has Maine roots. He played his college basketball at UMaine Farmington and took his first coaching job at Woodland High School. The Hornets play the Celtics tonight and the game is live on Sports Radio 92.9 The Ticket with coverage starting at 7pm.
