The second annual MIllinocket Marathon & Half Race is set for this Saturday morning and it looks like the numbers of runners this year could be in the hundreds.

That is way up from the 50 runners who competed a year ago.

The race is the brainchild of well known runner Gary Allen from Crow Athletics. He directs the MDI Marathon in Bar Harbor.

His idea to help a struggling mill town, at least for a day, is to hold this free marathon event and the only caveat for runners is to help support local businesses while in Millinocket for the race.

The race is now USATF certified as a qualifier for the Boston Marathon.

The course is two loops, beginning in downtown Millinocket and then out to the Golden Road, which will provide lots of scenic views of Mt. Katahdin.

The expectation for Saturday - 500 to 1,000 runners in Millinocket.
