It finally happened. A #16 seed beat a #1 seed in the NCAA Tournament. And, it was American East Conference champ UMaryland Baltimore County that did it to Virginia, 74-54.

Not only was it a 16th seed beating a number one seed, Virginia was the overall number one seed in the tourney.

The #16 team had been 0-135 in the matchup over the years.

Then Jairus Lyles and the Retrievers showed up.

Lyles scored 28 points to lead UMBC. Virginia is best known for its defense but had no answer for Lyles.

Keep in mind, UMBC scored a buzzer-beating three-pointers to knock off Vermont to win the America East title to get into the NCAA tourney.
