UMaine hockey's 40th year celebration weekend begins with a 2-2 overtime tie with arch rival New Hampshire Friday night.

It looked like the Black Bears would take a 2-0 lead into the second period intermission after goals from Patrick Holway and Daniel Perez. But with just three seconds left in the period UNH scored on a tip-in shot. Then just a minute into the third period, the Wildcats scored again to tie the game 2-2.

It would stay that way for the rest of the night.

Jeremy Swayman made 31 saves for Maine. Daniel Tirone had 33 for UNH.

Each team gets a point in the Hockey East standings and that puts the Black Bears at 6-6-2 and the Wildcats 4-7-2. Overall Maine is 12-9-3, New Hampshire is 9-11-3.

Game two of the weekend series is tonight.
