Before he was known as the Boston College coach during the Doug Flutie days, Jack Bicknell coached the UMaine Black Bears. This weekend, 'Cowboy Jack' and many of his players from the late 1970's return to Orono to take a bow and swap some old stories.

Saturday at 3:30pm the 2015 Black Bears play their home opener vs Rhode Island.

From 1976 to 1980 Bicknell coached Maine and his quarterback during the first two years was Jack Cosgrove.

After Maine, Bicknell spent 10 years as Boston College head coach and then spent 14 years as head coach of NFL Europe teams in Barcelona, Scotland and in Hamburg.

Friday night and Saturday many of his players from nearly 40 years ago will return to the UMaine campus to honor their coach.

NOTE: Bicknell was the head coach for two of the more famous plays in college football. The 1978 UMaine vs UNH game and field goal bat-ball play that led to a touchdown, and a rule change.

And, in 1984 Bicknell and his Boston College team rocked the sports world with the Doug Flutie 'Miracle in Miami'...
