Two of the state’s best basketball players faced off in the first McDonald's High School Athlete of the Week of the winter sports season, but only one could walk away with the title.

Kyle Bouchard of Houlton High School secured 60 percent of the vote over Messalonskee's Nick Mayo. Bouchard, a senior forward  helped his Shiretowners  get off to a perfect start with wins over Mattanawcook Academy and Fort Kent. Bouchard totaled 57 points and 17 rebounds opening week. He plans to play at Division II Bentley College next year.

Mayo had an equally impressive first week, helping his Eagles to three wins. In those wins, the senior center scored 91 points and ripped down 41 rebounds. He will attend Division I Eastern Kentucky next year.

Here are the final results.
