Saturday's high tide is forcing Bangor Parks & Recreation officials to change the finish line for the 53rd Kenduskeag Stream Canoe Race.

Boats will not be able to go under the last two bridges (see below) near the usual downtown Bangor finish line.

Paddlers will now do the mandatory portage at Maxfield Dam on Valley Avenue and then put the boat back in the water to run the so called 'Shopping Cart' and the course will end there.

That means the race will be bit shorter than the usual 16.5 miles.

Check out the news release from Bangor Parks & Rec....

Due to high tide and the inability for boats to safely go under either of the last 2 bridges near the finish line in downtown Bangor, we have had to make a few changes.

  • NEW FINISH LINE – Immediately after Shopping Cart

o   After mandatory portage at Maxfield Dam, put your craft back in and run Shopping Cart

o   There will be a LARGE finish line sign on Stream Right

o   TAKE OUT IMMEDIATELY AFTER FINISH LINE ON STREAM RIGHT

  • Parking lot will be closed to leave your boats
  • WARMING TENT, CHILI AND CHOWDER, RESULT BOARD AND AWARDS WILL STILL BE HELD AT THE USUAL SPOT AT GOMEZ PARK

o   There will be a bus for ALL racers running from finish line area to Gomez Park starting at 11:00 am

o   Busses will also be running from Gomez Park back to Kenduskeag for racers through the day.
