Fleming Over Onek In Battle Of Rams
With his team leading by three points and five seconds left in the game, Bangor senior Noah Missbrenner stole the ball from Deering's standout player Ben Onek and then hit two free throws to seal the 47-42 for the Rams Saturday afternoon.
The victory marks the end of one of the best weeks a Rams team has had in a long time. The Rams beat unbeaten Edward Little, then best the Hampden Broncos on their home floor and then the takedown of the Deering Rams.
With a record of 10-1, Bangor has a firm grip on the #1 spot in Class AA North.
The battle of the Rams featured two of the top players in the state. 6-foot-6 Matt Fleming of Bangor against 6-foot-6 Ben Onek of Deering.
Fleming got the better of it in this one. He scored 18 points. Onek had 13 points but none in the fourth quarter. Bangor outscored Deering 12- 5 in that fourth period to win it.
Damien Vance added 18 for Bangor. Henry Westrich scored 9.
Bangor is now 10-1. Deering falls to 6-4.
