Home Opener Split For UMaine
The UMaine baseball team split its America East Conference home opener doubleheader. A win in game one 2-1 and loss in game two 4-1.
The Black Bears are now 3-22 overall (2-5 AE). UMBC is 14-12 and 2-5.
The teams play one more game in the weekend series Sunday afternoon.
GAME ONE UMaine 2 UMBC 1: Nick Silva was brilliant on the hill for the Black Bears, pitching 8.1 innings of one run, three hit baseball. He struck out seven and walked four.
Trevor Delaite came on to get the final two outs on strikeouts. He picks up his second save of the season.
Colin Ridley and Caleb Kerbs got the RBIs for Maine.
GAME TWO UMBC 4 UMaine 1: Senior Justn Courtney pitched on the Mahaney Diamond mound for the first time is two years. He is coming back from 'Tommy John' arm surgery.
Hernen Sardinas clubbed a solo home run in the 1st inning to stake the Black Bears to a lead.
Courtney ran into trouble in the 3rd inning. After getting two outs, the Retrievers jumped on him for a triple, two singles, a walk and another triple. UMBC scored four times and that was it.
Peter Kemble and Dillon Stimpson pitched shutout ball for the last four innings.
Maine's offense could manage just three hits off UMBC pitcher Nick Trabbacchi.
NOTE: The UMaine softball team split a doubleheader at UMBC Saturday afternoon. the Bears lost the first game 7-0 but turned around and won the second game 4-0. Maine is now 8-19 overall and 1-4 AE.
