Walston Scores 1000th Point to Lead Orono over MDI 61-47 [STATS]

On paper, you knew this was going to be a tough way for the MDI Trojans to open their season. They were playing at Orono, the defending Class B State Champions. The Red Riots were going to receiver their 2023 championship rings prior to game. There was an induction for the Hall-of-Fame Class at halftime and then unbeknownst to most, Pierce Walston was 23 points away from 1000 points

Orono ended up winning the game 61-47, as Pierce Walton scored his 1000th point with 5:06 left in the 4th Quarter.

Orono led 16-10 at the end of the 1st Quarter and 28-20 at the Half. The Red Riots pulled away in the 2nd Half, leading 42-30 at the end of the 3rd Quarter.

MDI was led by Jameson Weir with 16 points. James Witham scoring his 1st varsity points had 12  points including 4 3-pointers. The Trojans made 6 3's on the afternoon. In addition to Witham's 4 3's,  and Jarron Biekert and Cal Hodgdon each had a 3-pointer.

Walston had a game-high 23 points to lead Orono. Ben Francis had 15 points and Will Francis had 13 points. Orono was 10-13 from the free throw line. Walston, Francis and Bergen Sodenberg each had a 3-pointer.

Orono starts the season at 1-0 and will host Washington Academy on Tuesday, December 12th at 7 p.m. before traveling to Ellsworth on Thursday, December 14th at 7 p.m. That Orono-Ellsworth game will be broadcast on AM 1370 WDEA, on WDEA Internet Radio, and on our free downloadable APP and on any Alexa enabled device

MDI, now 0-1, will play at Hermon on Wednesday, December 13th at 7 p.m. .
