The MCI Huskies football team's dramatic last-second win on state championship Saturday was voted top Maine sports story for 2016 by sports fans who voted over the past two weeks at 929theticket.com.

The MCI football finish garnered 43% of the over 1,200 votes. The Huskies beat Lisbon for the Class D state title 20-14 in come-from-behind fashion. The game winning play was a muffed field goal try that holder Eli Bussell picked up and ran in for the touchdown as time expired. It was MCI's first title since 1974.

Old Town High School's sweep of Class B baseball and softball in the spring was runnerup in voting with almost 22% of the votes.
