Olympia Sports Releases List of Maine Stores That Will Be Closing
Olympia Sports has released a list of the stores that will close after the chain was purchased by an out-of-state sports retailer. According to the release, eight Maine stores will close. Those stores are located in Bangor, Belfast, Biddeford, Farmington, Freeport, Sanford, South Paris and Wells.
Those eight Maine stores are among 76 stores nationwide that will close after the chain was purchased by sports retailer JackRabbit. Sadly, it will put many folks out of work, but in this current job market, it shouldn't be too hard for those folks to bounce back.
I had many friends in southern Maine over the years that worked for Olympia. Whether it was in the store in the mall, or at their big warehouse/distribution center in Scarborough, I knew several people who put their time in for that company, which originally opened it's first store in South Portland in 1975.
I never personally put in a stint there, but one musician friend in particular was there for over 20 years. He started as a warehouse worker, and eventually became head of Human Resources. It was thought of as a place where you could earn an honest day's pay for an honest day's work.
The "store closing" sale started Friday. Discounts will be offered on all men's, women's and kids' sneakers, running shoes, basketball shoes, boots, joggers, sweatpants, hoodies, sweatshirts, long and short sleeved t-shirts, coats, socks, hats, and much more, according to the release.
So you might as well get out and snag up what you can of the good stuff, before all that's left is size 17 sneakers, and XXXL sweatpants. Meh, who am I kidding.... I already bought all of those.
