The Penobscot River gets a little more traffic starting today through Sunday as paddlers come from all over the country to compete in the Whitewater Nationals Regatta.

Today is practice day on the river and then Thursday through Sunday paddlers will compete in downriver and sprints races in canoes, kayaks and stand up paddle boards.

Racers begin in Old Town and the course runs about 9.5 miles down toward Veazie.

This will be the third and final year for the Whitewater Nationals on the Penobscot River. The American Canoe Association (ACA) moves the event to various sites around the country.
