Portugal won its first major national soccer competition by beating France 1-0 in extra time of the European National Championships on Sunday afternoon.

The Portuguese side won despite their star Cristiano Ronaldo leaving the game after minute 25 of the contest.  The French dominated the first half of play, but were unable to get any balls past a stingy Portugal defense.

Both teams were still level after 90 minutes and the allotted stoppage time and the Euros went into extra time for the first time ever.  Eder scored at minute 100 overall to give Portugal the edge and they held on for the title.

The championship was the first ever in the nation's history, and also the first internationally for Ronaldo.  With the win, Portugal clinches a spot in the Confederations Cup next year in Russia and will begin trying to qualify for the World Cup in two years.
