Remembering Witches vs Tigers 1970
For some Brewer and Biddeford football fans, the Friday night opening night matchup conjures up memories of a game nearly 50 years ago - the 1970 Class A state championship game won by the Witches 48-20.
The game cemented Coach Ken Perrone and his Brewer team as one of the greatest teams in Maine high school football history.
Ralph Payne, Don McGlauflin, Bob Van Peursem et al completed an 11-0 season, outscoring opponents 440-20.
The state game was played at Bates College in Lewiston. Biddeford scored an early touchdown to take a lead. In fact, they led 14-6 during the first half of play.
But in the second half, Brewer scored five touchdowns to win the state championship going away.
The high school rankings they compiled at the end of the season back then had Brewer #1 in Maine, #1 in New England and #5 in the nation.
Biddeford did come back and win the 1971 state championship plus seven more titles since 1970.
The two schools with similar orange and black colors haven't met since 1979, 39 years ago. Tigers coach Brian Curit remembers because he played in it. He remembers his Biddeford team winning a close game.
Brewer is coming off a 4-4 season. Biddeford was 5-3 a year ago.
Let's see if this 2018 matchup leads to more history for one of the teams.
