The longest-serving hockey commissioner in NCAA history is stepping away at the end of the 2019-2020 season. Joe Bertagna will have been Hockey East Association commissioner for 23 years and for 38 years in total counting 15 years as ECAC commish.

Bertagna will hold a teleconference on Tuesday to talk more about his decision.

"Joe has been a tremendous leader of Hockey East since taking o ver as our first-ever full-time commissioner 22 years ago," said Jeff Schulman, Director of Athletics for the University of Vermont and Chair of Hockey East's Men's Executive Committee. "He has been the driving force in helping to grow our men's and women's leagues both in terms of membership, competitive quality, and our position in the landscape of Division I college hockey." - Hockey East Press Release

Bertagna was a goalie in high school and was a two year starter for Harvard in college.

He is executive director of the American Hockey Coaches Association and he serves on the Board of Directors of USA Hockey.

UMaine is one of the 11 schools that make up Hockey East.
