Coffee News Bangor American Legion pitcher Jesse Colford was brilliant on the mound as the Comrades shutout Fayette Staples of Saco 4-0 in the first round of the state tournament.

Colford struck out 15 batters, didn't walk anyone and gave up just two hits in 6.2 innings of work.

Comrades coach Dave Morris took Colford out of the game after 73 pitches and turned the game over to Noah Missbrenner who pitched the final 2.1 innings. Keeping Colford to 73 pitches means if Bangor gets to Sunday's championship round he would be eligible to throw with three days rest under new Legion pitching rules.

Colford also started the four run 5th inning for the Comrades with a base hit and scored the game's first run.

The Coffee News team now plays on Thursday at 4pm.
