For the first time since 1992 the Ellsworth Eagles baseball team is Class B North Region champion, beating Hermon 9-5 at Mansfield Stadium Wednesday afternoon.

So much for a low scoring, pitcher's duel that many expected.

The Eagles and Hawks combined to score five runs in the first inning. Both starting pitchers, Conner Wagstaff from Ellsworth and Jacques Labonte from Hermon threw a lot of pitches early in the game.

The Eagles continued to pound away, scoring two runs in the third, fourth and fifth innings to take command.

Wagstaff delivered big with the bat in those innings with a single and a triple that scored runs.

While the Eagles did not commit an errors, the Hawks made five of them and it was costly.

Wagstaff pitched the first 5.1 innings to get the win. Matt Burnett worked the final five outs.

Ellsworth will play Freeport for the state title on Saturday.

Hermon finishes the season at 17-2.
