Hewes, Burnett, McKechnie For Athlete of Week [VOTE]
Time for the final High School Athlete of the Week vote, the state championship edition of the weekly vote. Three North Region teams won state titles and you decide the top performance.
Senior pitcher Libby Hewes of the Brewer Witches needed just 77 pitches to get the win over York, 7-1, in the Class B State Championship game. She allowed five hits and did not walk a batter. Libby induced 14 ground ball outs.
The Witches have won back-to-back state titles with Hewes in the circle.
Ellsworth's senior pitcher Matt Burnett spun a three-hit shutout in a 2-0 win over Freeport in the Class B state title game. He struck out seven and also had the game winning RBI with a sacrifice fly.
Burnett also came on to get a save in the regional championship game earlier in the week. The Eagles won their first state championship in 31 years.
Penobscot Valley HS junior pitcher Leine McKechnie was in the circle in a state title game for the third straight year and with the 11-6 win over Greenville. McKechnie and the Howlers won their second Class D state championship.
McKechnie, who owns the school strikeout record, fanned another 11 batters against the Lakers. She allowed eight hits and walked three.
