UMass hockey continues to set program history. Defenseman Cale Makar is the 39th Hobey Baker Award winner. It's the award that goes to college hockey's top player.

He is the first UMass player to win the award.

A national audience will get to see why Makar won the honor. The Minutemen play Minnesota-Duluth in the NCAA Championship game tonight in Buffalo. Playing in a title game is another first for UMass hockey.

Makar has 49 points this season. That's tops among defensemen and third best in all of college hockey. His plus/minus rating is +33 which is second best in college hockey.

Makar is a draft pick of the Colorado Avalanche.

NOTE: Cale Makar had a goal and two assists in three games vs UMaine this season. The Black Bears were 1-2 vs the Minutemen.
