Husson’s Smith Wins Golden Helmet Award
Husson University running back John Smith is New England Football Writers Association Golden Helmet Award winner for last week's 301 yard rushing performance in the Eagles win over Endicott College.
The Golden Helmet is awarded every Wednesday during the football season in Boston. One award goes to the top player from the region in Division I and another award goes to the top player in Division II and III ranks. Over 40 schools make up the Divisiion II & III ranks in New England.
Smith will be eligible for the year-end Golden Helmet Award, an award presented since 1974.. Players from Maine schools to win that honor include UMaine's Marcus Wasilewski (2013), MMA's Jim Bower (2009) and Kirk Matthieu (1992), Bates College's Chris Hickey (1987) and Larry DiGimmararino (1981),
Earlier in the week, Smith was named ECFC Player of the Week and Noontime Sports Player of the Week, ECAC Division III North Player of the Week and was named to the D3football.com National Team of the Week.
