Fans of high school basketball have been counting down the days to the kickoff to tournament season for months.

The good news is that the wait is almost over.

According to the Augusta Civic Center website, the tournament will get underway this Friday, February 16.

As the Augusta Civic Center gets ready for the tournaments, workers spent a few hours covering the rubberized floor with a wooden parquet floor.  The team from the KJ was there to get video of the floor installation.

This video is not only fascinating, but a great way to kill a few minutes at work.  Check it out:

Talk about teamwork!  The civic center team made quick work of the nearly 3,200-square-foot court.

Here's a really cool time-lapse video of the same thing:

This history of the Augusta Civic Center

One of the most iconic buildings in Central Maine, the Augusta Civic Center has been welcoming guests for the last 50 years.

The building was designed by Bunker & Savage Architects and constructed by Stewart and Williams Construction Company.  The building's official opening was on January 3, 1974.

The first major event hosted at the Augusta Civic Center was the Maine Agricultural Trade Show in January 1973.

Over the years, the venue has hosted countless trade shows, parties, and concerts.  At one point, before the venues were built in Portland and Bangor, the Augusta Civic Center was Maine's premiere concert venue.

In May of 1977, the Augusta Civic Center even hosted Elvis.  The venue had been scheduled to host the King of Rock & Roll, again, in August of 1977.  Sadly, he passed away days before the concert was scheduled to take place.

We are all happy to see the Augusta Civic Center going strong after over half a century.  We hope the venue is around for years to come!
