The City of Brewer is mourning the loss of its Deputy Mayor, Jerry Goss, who had also worked for the city's school department for many years.

His Many Jobs...

There are so many wonderful things to say about Jerry Goss, it's hard to know where to start. He was part of the political fabric of Brewer, having served as a City Councilor, as a Mayor, and, at the time of his death as the Deputy Mayor. Jerry was a teacher and a school administrator, spending a total of thirty-three years in education. During eighteen of those years, he was a teacher and assistant principal at Joseph A. Leonard Jr. High School in Old Town. The rest of his educational tenure was spent as the principal of Brewer High School.

Jerry chaired the group that got the beautiful Brewer Community School built, putting all of the city's pre-k through 8th grade students in one building, instead of moving them every couple of years.

His Love of Sports...

Sports lovers knew him as the co-chair of the Eastern Maine BCD Basketball Tournaments at the Bangor Auditorium. And according to his bio on the City of Brewer's website, he was the president of the Rocky Knoll Golf Country Club in Orrington.

His latest project was the newly developed sports complex at Brewer High School, that he was actively involved with for eight years. Just last week, Jerry walked the freshly laid turf, and Mayor Jenn Morin told us he had a huge smile on his face, filled with joy that it finally became a reality.

The Day He Gave Me a Challenge Coin...

I first met Jerry when my children were attending Brewer High School, but it was my last encounter with him that was the most memorable. In 2012, I celebrated 25 years at the radio station and then-Mayor Jerry Goss presented me with a Challenge Coin from the City of Brewer. As a Brewer Witch, through and through, it was a huge honor and I appreciated his taking the time to do it.

Senator Susan Collins released a statement about Jerry's death on Thursday, saying she is 'deeply saddened.'

Jerry always did what he felt was right , and he helped make Brewer a wonderful place to live. I will miss him.

Jerry Goss died suddenly on Thursday at the age of 76. He is survived by his wife, two sons and their wives, and three grandchildren. Our sincerest condolences to all of them, as well as to Jerry's family, friends, and colleagues.
