12-year MLB catcher Joe Oliver has been named the new manager for the Red Sox Double-A Portland Sea Dogs. He's been skipper of the Sox High-A team in Salem team in the Carolina League for the past three years.

Darren Fenster, who had been Sea Dogs manager, becomes the Red Sox minor league outfield and baserunning coordinator.

Oliver began is MLB playing career with Cincinnati and won a World Series with the Reds in 1990. He also played for six other big league teams, including the Red Sox in 2001.

He's a minor league manager for the Sox for five years.

Last season in Salem, Oliver managed prospects such as INF Boby Dalbec, RHP Durbin Feltman and P Darwinzon Hermandez. Some of these highly touted players could be playing in Portland this year.

The Sea Dogs season begins April 4th.
