Top-seed Southern Aroostook Warriors Defeat Katahdin Cougars [GIRLS]

Last year, the Southern Aroostook was the youngest team in the tournament. This year, they have one more year of experience, and on Monday night the Warriors played like a veteran squad.

After a strong start from the No. 9 Katahdin Cougars, Southern Aroostook (18-1) settled down midway through the second quarter and pulled away in the second half to a 47-31 quarterfinal win.

On the Warriors' 12-person roster, there are four eighth graders, four freshmen and four sophomores. As their roster is balanced, so was their scoring on Monday.

Kylie Vining led teh Warriors with 13 points. Kassidy Mathers and Katelyn Slauenwhite each had 8 points and Sydney Brewer had 7 points. [FULL STORY]

Easton Bears Earn Quarterfinal Win Over Deer Isle-Stonington [GIRLS]

The Easton Bears hadn't been to the Maine High School Basketball Tournament in 26 years. On Monday, they made the most of it.

The No. 4 Bears took control of the game early, building a 21-5 lead at halftime and winning their Class D North quarterfinal match-up with Deer Isle-Stonington 45-23 at the Cross Insurance Center in Bangor.

Top-seed Southern Aroostook Rolls Over Greater Houlton Christian [BOYS]

The top-seed Southern Aroostook Warriors rolled over No. 9 Greater Houlton Christian Academy Monday at the Cross Insurance Center in Bangor, earning a bid into the Class D North semifinals.

The veteran Warriors squad pressed the relatively inexperienced Eagles from the outset, turning turnovers into points and running away to an 73-50 quarterfinal win.

With Southern Aroostook up by 38 points heading into the fourth quarter, both teams allowed their younger players on the floor. Greater Houlton Christian did have their fans cheering in the fourth quarter as their reserves closed the gap with the Warriors. [FULL STORY]

Central Aroostook Panthers Hold Off Jonesport-Beals [BOYS]

The Central Aroostook Panthers held off a young Jonesport-Beals team in a Monday afternoon Class D North quarterfinal at the Cross Insurance Center in Bangor.

After the game was tied at halftime and close after three quarters, the Panthers (13-6) took the lead in the fourth quarter earned the 54-46 win over the Royals (11-8).

Sophomore Ben Thomas led the Panthers with 18 points. Senior captain Zach Crouch added 13 points in the win.

Junior Isaiah Faulkingham scored 15 points for the young Royals, whose roster features only two seniors. [FULL STORY]

Shead Tigerettes Overpower Ashland In Class D Quarterfinal [GIRLS]

The Shead Tigerettes proved too much for the Ashland Hornets Monday, cruising to a quarterfinal victory at the Cross Insurance Center in Bangor.

The No. 2 Tigers (17-2) employed a potent offensive attack on their way to a 73-33 win over No. 7 Ashland, which ends its season at 9-11.

Shead, the defending Class D North champions, was led by senior captain Holly Preston with 19 points. Junior Cassidy Wilder scored 16 points and sophomore Madison Greenlaw added 13. [FULL STORY]

Washburn Beavers Upset Central Aroostook In D North Quarterfinal [GIRLS]

The No. 6 Washburn Beavers withheld a late charge from the No. 3 Central Aroostook Panthers to earn a quarterfinal victory Monday morning at the Cross Insurance Center in Bangor.

Washburn (11-8) built a double-digit lead in the third quarter, hit some key free throws late in the game and held on for 54-47 win over Central Aroostook to earn a spot in the Class D North semifinals.

Kassandra Farley led the Beavers with 22 points, including 9-10 from the line in the final minutes. From there, it was a balanced scoring attack for Washburn. Maggie Castonguay had nine points. Skylar Mette, Kiristen Sarmiento and Alexis Carney each added 8 points. [FULL STORY]
