Former UMaine Black Bear Jim Montgomery has been named the Spencer Penrose NCAA Division I Coach of the Year award on Tuesday morning.

The Denver coach was one of ten finalists announced last week, but took home the honor Tuesday beating Harvard University's Ted Donato who finished second in the voting.  Montgomery has compiled a 100-47-18 record with the Denver team since arriving with the team.  The Denver Post also reports that NHL teams may be interested in bringing Montgomery in as a head coach this summer.

The former Black Bear played four seasons in Orono and captained the 1992-93 UMaine side that went 42-1-2 and won a National Title.

Montgomery will be honored at an awards banquet in Naples, Florida on April 26th.
