The University of Maine announced that alumnus Tom Savage and his wife Sally have made a $1 million dollar donation to jump start a hockey endowment drive. The Savage Challenge is a 5-year fundraising drive that will seek to match and exceed their contribution to establish an endowment for the UMaine men's hockey program. Funds from the endowment will be used to cover the operational expenses of the program. The University's hope is that the announcement will spark interest in former players and coaches to also contribute and become part of the programs future.

“Like thousands of other Mainers, Maine hockey holds a special place in my heart,” says Tom Savage. “I will never forget how proud we were when we drove over the bridge in Kittery and saw the ‘1993 National Champions’ sign over 20 years ago, and I still get excited when Alfond Arena is shaking after a big Maine goal. For many of us, this program provides a great sense of pride, knowing that Maine can compete for championships on a national stage.
