After spotting UMass Lowell two goals, the UMaine Black Bears scored four unanswered goals and beat the Rivers Hawks 4-3 Friday night in the Hockey East Conference home opener.

The barrage of goals came in a 12 minute span of the second period.

Chase Pearson netted the first two. Patrick Shea and Tim Doherty scored the other two on the powerplay.

The River Hawks inched closer with a late game goal but the Bears start HE ho play with a victory.

Jeremy Swayman made 27 saves. UML's Tyler Wall made 23.

The Black Bears improve to 3-3-1 overall (1-0 HE). UMass Lowell is 3-4 and 0-2.

Game two of the weekend series at Alfond Arena is tonight.
