Longtime University of Southern Maine baseball coach Ed Flaherty could join a select club of college coaches this weekend - the 1,000 win club.

Entering weekend play, Flaherty's teams have 996 games in his 32 years at USM. This Huskies play two games vs Keene State on Saturday and two games vs MIT on Sunday. A weekend sweep gives Flaherty exactly 1,000 wins.

At the moment, USM is 22-8 (7-3 LEC) and the Huskies have won six of their last seven games. Flaherty started the '18 season at 974-435-4 (.691%), including 16 seasons of 30 or more wins and two NCAA Division III national titles.

Former UMaine, Husson and Colby coach John Winkin retired with 1,043 wins. Flaherty was an All-American player at UMaine under Winkin in the 1970s.

The baseball field on the Gorham campus was named 'Flaherty Field' in ceremonies held last year.

NOTE: Among the former high school North Region players on the USM team are Bangor's Andrew Hillier, Messalonksee's Jake Dexter, Josh Joy and Devin Warren, Winslow's Dylan Hapworth, Washington Academy's Gage Feeney and Mt. Blue's Colton Lawrence.
