Speed limits vary across the United States. In the West, rural freeways often allow speeds of 70 to 80 mph, while in the East, limits typically stay around 65 to 70 mph.

It should come as no surprise that Maine likes to stand out. As the only state with one syllable and the only state that borders just one other state, Maine’s driving rules are a bit different too.

In New England, most states like Connecticut, Vermont, Rhode Island, and Massachusetts top out at 65 mph.

New Hampshire goes a bit higher at 70 mph. But Maine takes the lead with a speed limit of 75 mph, making it the fastest state in the region.

So, where is the road in Maine where you can drive faster than anywhere else in New England?

This stretch of road, found on I-95 between Old Town and Houlton, has a 75 mph speed limit, the highest on the East Coast. This change occurred in 2011 when a bill was passed to raise the speed limit from 65 to 75 mph, making Maine the first state east of the Mississippi River to do so since the 1970s.

While it might be tempting to go even faster, it should go without saying: remember to drive safely.

In Maine, speeding fines start at $50, and if you exceed the limit by 30 mph or more, it’s considered a criminal offense. While it might be tempting to speed up, your safety is more important. Regardless of the speed limit, keep your focus on the road and practice safe driving at all times.
