
Maine Soccer Three-Peats Beating Vermont in Shootout to Win America East
The Maine Black Bears the #4 seed in America East beat #2 Vermont in a shootout to win their 3rd consecutive America East Soccer Championship and automatic trip to the NCAA Championships on Sunday afternoon, November 9th in Vermont.
Vermont took a 2-0 lead with goals at the 3:58 and 18:32 mark. But Maine drew within 1 goal, when Jordane Pinette scored, assisted by Luise Reinwald with 11:06 left to play in the 1st Half.
Vermont led 2-1 at the end of the 1st Half.
Grace Johnson tied the game with 12:45 gone in the 2nd Half, assisted by Julie Lossius and Luise Reinwald.
Elena Barenberg who had 6 saves in the game, made the save of the game on a break-away with 14 minutes left to play, tied at 2-2. With the attacker coming straight on, Barenberg held her ground, kicking the ball away with her right foot on the shot.
The game was tied at 2-2 at the end of the regulation.
After 2 10-minute overtimes, the game went to a shootout.
Barenberg saved Vermont's 3rd shot and then with Maine leading the shootout 4-3 saved the Catamount's last chance to tie the game.
Maine outshot Vermont17-15 and had a 10-8 shots-on-goal advantage.
Barenberg was named the America East Tournament Outstanding Player. She was joined on the America East Championship Team by teammates Olivia Grisdale, Jordane Pinette and Luise Reinwald.
Vermont finishes the season 8-4-6 while Maine improves to 6-7-4. Maine will find out who their opponent will be in the NCAA Tournament on Monday, November 10th on the Selection Show at 4 p.m.
