Mt. Ararat High School soon-to-be senior Caleb Manuel beat out talented Cole Anderson for the Class A schoolboy state title last fall. Now Manuel is in position to win the New England Amateur Championship.

Heading into Tuesday's final round of play in Stratford, Connecticut, Manuel is 3-under par (137), just two shots behind the leader, Ben James from Connecticut (5-under, 136).

He is the highest ranked of the 10 Maine juniors in the field.

Along with the individual championships, golfers are competing in team competition.

The Maine boys team is 4th among the six teams. The Maine girls team is in 3rd place among five state teams competing.
